Dust Collector Fire New Jersey

Fire in an exterior cyclone sawdust collector where officials believe that a mechanical problem caused a spark, igniting the sawdust. Would spark detection and extinguishment system lessened the severity and likelihood of this incident? Additionally, a proactive inspection and maintenance program as outlined in NPFA 664 will provide added protection to all manufacturing facilities that process combustible particulate solids.

At least the dust dust collector was outside on the wood dust one.

Great observation. Of the 89+ combustible dust related fires and explosions since Feb. 7, 2008, 42% of the incidents are dust collector related. I've found that of the 43%, 20% are located outside.

It seems if the facilities utilized spark detection and extinguishment systems then over half of the incidents would maybe been prevented and the occurrence mitigated.
