Combustible Dust Explosions and Fires-ATEX

Welcome Aboard the Combustible Dust Policy Institute site! In 2012, a preliminary analysis of 2011 NFIRS data indicated 500+ combustible dust related fires and explosions in many sectors throughout the United States with the majority of incidents "near misses." The primary goal of this site concerning the complex subject of combustible dust is to bring forth a situational awareness to global stakeholders, which hopefully will lessen the occurrence and reduce the severity of future accidents.

Minimizing the Severity of Consequence

Early morning fire and explosion at Pinal Energy ethanol plant. This is an excellent example of NFPA combustible dust standards best engineering practices minimizing the severity of consequence of combustible dust related fires and explosions. In reality, combustible dust explosions cannot be totally prevented, only the probability of occurrence reduced and the severity of consequence minimized.

John, Excellent analysis, we can certainly reduce probablity and severity by utilizing best engineering practices, but may never be be able to totally prevent these type events in process industries. A point many apparently do not recognize.
